Her paternal grandparents were Lewis Burwell and Lucy Higginson; her maternal grandparents were Anthony Smith and Martha Bacon. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Nathaniel, Lewis, Bacon, James, Joanna, Elizabeth, Lucy, Jane and ?. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Armistead, Mary, Martha and Jane.-
