His paternal grandparents were Luke Williams and Lucy Williams; his maternal grandparents were James Quarles and Catherine Read. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Sterling Quarles, Butler, Elizabeth, Mary Polly, Elizabeth (Betsy) and Catherine (Caty) Read. He was the third oldest of the seven children.-
