Sarah A was born in May 1896 in North Carolina.¹ Sarah A's father was Benjamin Frank Russell and her mother was Sarah M. "Sallie" Riddick. She had five brothers and eight sisters, named Walter L., Benjamin E., Harry A, Clyde, Clide F, Elena S., G*La A, Elizzabeth F, Ruth R, Bessie, Agnes Selma, Agnes C and Sarah. She was the thirteenth oldest of the fourteen children.
