Ellen was born about 1724 in St. Mary's Co., MD.¹ Ellen's father was John Read and her mother was Hannah Clarke. Her maternal grandparents were Philip Clarke and Catherine Wilson. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Philip, Charles and Barbara. She was the third oldest of the five children.
