Barbara was born about 1731 in St. Mary's Co., MD.¹ Barbara's father was John Read and her mother was Hannah Clarke. Her maternal grandparents were Philip Clarke and Catherine Wilson. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Philip, Charles and Ellen. She was the youngest of the five children.
