John was born on June 6th, 1897.  John's father was John Alexander Findlay and his mother was Mary Hieze.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Findlay and Sarah Knackston. He had a brother and two sisters, named Claud, Alma and Muriel.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Cyril and Maude.
