John was born on August 21st, 1882 in Longford, Tas.  John's father was John Alexander Findlay and his mother was Beatrice Eliza West.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Findlay and Sarah Knackston. He had a brother and a sister, named Cyril and Maude.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Claud, John, Alma and Muriel.
