William was born on June 28th, 1819 in Eynsham, Oxfordshire.  William's father was Joseph WHITE and his mother was Alice GARDNER.  His maternal grandparents were Edward GARDNER and Susanna SMITH. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named Benjamin, Daniel, Mary, Alice, Jane, Hannah, Elizabeth, Sarah, Elizabeth, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
