Sarah was born on March 20th, 1837 in Eynsham, Oxfordshire.  Sarah's father was Joseph WHITE and her mother was Alice GARDNER.  Her maternal grandparents were Edward GARDNER and Susanna SMITH. She had three brothers and eight sisters, named William, Benjamin, Daniel, Mary, Alice, Jane, Hannah, Elizabeth, Sarah, Elizabeth and Eliza.  She was the second youngest of the twelve children.
