Benjamin was born on February 8th, 1823 in Eynsham, Oxfordshire.  Benjamin's father was Joseph WHITE and his mother was Alice GARDNER.  His maternal grandparents were Edward GARDNER and Susanna SMITH. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named William, Daniel, Mary, Alice, Jane, Hannah, Elizabeth, Sarah, Elizabeth, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.
