Charles was born in 1838 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.  Charles' father was James STANLEY and his mother was Mary Anne BATHURST.  His paternal grandparents were Zebulon STANLEY and Ann SHAW. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, John Wesley Ashby, S, Ann, Catherine and Abigail.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
