Benjamin was born on December 18th, 1831 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.  Benjamin's father was James STANLEY and his mother was Mary Anne BATHURST.  His paternal grandparents were Zebulon STANLEY and Ann SHAW. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John Wesley Ashby, Charles, S, Ann, Catherine and Abigail.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
