Jane was born in 1855 in Pembroke Dock, Wales, UK.  Jane's father was William Irwin Beresford SCOTT and her mother was Mary CHOWN.  Her paternal grandparents were William SCOTT and Lavinia; her maternal grandparents are William CHOWN and Sarah WILLIAMS. She had two brothers and four sisters, named William Irwin, William Henry, Lavinia Sarah, Mary Jane, Lavinia Rebecca and Ann.  She was the youngest of the seven children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Henry, Alfred and Maria.
