Robert was born in 1834 in East Peckham, Kent, England.  Robert's father was James SAUNDERS and his mother was Elizabeth JEFFERY.  His maternal grandparents were John JEFFERY and Mary. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Thomas, Charles, William, Martin Henry, Cecilia, Clara, Esther and Mary Ann.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
