Esther was born about 1844 in East Peckham, Kent, England.1   Esther's father was James SAUNDERS and her mother was Elizabeth JEFFERY.  Her maternal grandparents were John JEFFERY and Mary. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Robert, John, James, Thomas, Charles, William, Martin Henry, Cecilia, Clara and Mary Ann.  She was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
