John was born in 1836 in East Peckham, Kent, England.  John's father was James SAUNDERS and his mother was Elizabeth JEFFERY.  His maternal grandparents were John JEFFERY and Mary. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Thomas, Charles, William, Martin Henry, Cecilia, Clara, Esther and Mary Ann.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
