William was born in 1847 in Tudely & Capel, Kent, England.  William's father was William MARTIN and his mother was Mary TURNER.  His paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann. He had a brother and four sisters, named Alfred, Mary, Harriett, Sophia and Esther.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
