Alfred was born in 1852 in Tudely, Kent.  Alfred's father was William MARTIN and his mother was Mary TURNER.  His paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Mary, Harriett, Sophia and Esther.  He was the youngest of the six children.
