John was born in 1861 in East Anstey, Devon.  John's father was Richard Carter and his mother was Ann Melhuish.  His paternal grandparents were Stephen Carter and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Robert Melhuish and Ann. He had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Richard, Mary Ann, Sarah Jane, Elizabeth, Anna and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
