Matilda was born in 1812.  Matilda's father was Stephen Chambers Newberry Sr and her mother was Sarah (Sallie) Chambers.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Newberry and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were Elijah Chambers and Rebecca Moore. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Edward, Stephen, Elijah, William, James, Joseph, Rhoda, Mary, Polly and Cynthia.  Matilda and Joseph were twins.
