Luke was born in 1827.  Luke's father was John Diamond and his mother was Jane McNeil.  His maternal grandparents were James McNeill and Jane Smilie. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, James, John , Enoch, Mary, Nancy and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
