James was born on November 24th, 1830 in Alabama.1   James' father was John Diamond and his mother was Jane McNeil.  His maternal grandparents were James McNeill and Jane Smilie. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Luke, William, John , Enoch, Mary, Nancy and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 43 on November 6th, 1874.
