James was born in year 1701 in Suffolk, Whatfield and was baptised on May 1st, 1701.  James' father was James Garrad and his mother was Prudence.  He was the eleventh of twelve children.  He had six brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Richard, Samuel, William, John, Mary, Prudence, Prudence, Dorothy and Frances.
