Jacobus was born on January 17th, 1911.  Jacobus' father was Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and his mother was Jacomina Magritha Ehlers.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. He had two brothers and a sister, named Chris, David and Hester.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 92 in 2003.
