Hester was born on February 12th, 1917.  Hester's father was Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and her mother was Jacomina Magritha Ehlers.  Her paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. She had three brothers named Chris, Jacobus and David.  She is the youngest of the four children.
