Chris was born in 1909.  Chris' father was Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and his mother was Jacomina Magritha Ehlers.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. He had two brothers and a sister, named Jacobus, David and Hester.  He is the oldest of the four children.
