David was born in 1916.  David's father was Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and his mother was Jacomina Magritha Ehlers.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. He had two brothers and a sister, named Chris, Jacobus and Hester.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
