John was born in 1829 in Kettlewell, Yorkshire, England.1   John's father was John Pettyt and his mother was Annis Walker.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Pettyt and Agnes Ibbotson.  He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, George, Ellen, Esther, Anne (Nancy), Annis, Alice, Mary Ann and Sarah Jane.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
