Elizabeth was born in 1839 in Salterforth, Yorkshire, England.1   Elizabeth's father was Richard Petty and her mother was Martha (Petty).  She had four brothers and five sisters, named Richard, John, Sutcliffe Nelson, Joseph, Martha, Mercy, Mary, Sarah and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
