Lily was born in March 1885 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.1   Lily's father was Edwin C Newiss and her mother was Margaret Atkinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Newiss and Ann Hartley.  She had three brothers and four sisters, named John William, Joseph, Charley, Edwin Cattley, Floretta, Alice and Annie.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
