John was born in 1829 in Dundonald.  John's father was John Barclay and his mother was Mary Wallace.  His maternal grandparents were James Wallace and Jane Bone. He had a brother and four sisters, named James, Jane, Mary, Jessie and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the six children.
