Elizabeth was born in 1849 in Dundonald.  Elizabeth's father was John Barclay and her mother was Mary Wallace.  Her maternal grandparents were James Wallace and Jane Bone. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Jane, Mary and Jessie.  She was the youngest of the six children.
