James was born on January 20th, 1842 in Dundonald.  James' father was John Barclay and his mother was Mary Wallace.  His maternal grandparents were James Wallace and Jane Bone. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Jane, Mary, Jessie and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.  He died due to a medical problem at the age of 58 on March 26th, 1900 in Belston.
