Edwin's father was Joseph Best and his mother was Hannah Gillett.  His paternal grandfather is Joesph Best and his paternal grandmother was Grace Best. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named Arthur, James, Francis, Grace, Eliza, Rhoda, Hannah, Emma, Ann, Pamela, Lucy Jane and Jemmima.
