William was born on December 29th, 1833 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  William's father was John Linkleter and his mother was Elizabeth Murray.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Linklater and Elizabeth Arthurson; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Murray and <Unknown>.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Andrew, George, James, Margaret, Eliza and Jane.
