Joseph was born on September 7th, 1903 in Missouri.  Joseph's father was August A Gripka and his mother was Martha Bruenn.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Gripka and Mary Daus; his maternal grandparents were August Bruenn and Regina. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named John, Jerome, Sisbert, Lawrence, Agnes, Frances, Rose, Fridoline, Dorothy, Clara and Ruth.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.  He died from cancer at the age of 65 on February 2nd, 1969.  He was buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri.1

Joseph and Mary were married in a religious ceremony in June 1932.  They had two sons and a daughter, and also four children of unknown gender, named Francis, Harold, Mary Ann, Gripka, Gripka, Gripka and Gripka.
