His paternal grandparents were Corneilus Sprague Whitcomb and Elizabeth Patten. He had a brother named Vernon. He was the younger of the two children. He had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Eugene, Edwin, Pearl, Cornellius, Elizabeth and Gertrude.
