His paternal grandparents were Orlean Rankins and Hannah Miller; his maternal grandparents were John Watterman Kimpton and Amy Ann Acoby. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Laverne, Elmer, Dewitt, Alta D., Amy Elizabeth, Marietta, Margaret Ellen, Henrietta O "Etta", Blanche Francis and Grace M.. He was the second oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 87 on June 22nd, 1959 in Dundee, Monroe, Michigan, United States.
