James' father was Samual Gorham and his mother was Mary Anderson. His paternal grandparents were Capt Benjamin Gorham and Nancy Ann Hinckley. He had two brothers and a sister, named Benjamin, Richard and Nancy. He had a half-sister named Antoinette.¹
