Thomas was born on June 20th, 1847 in Port Elizabeth.  Thomas' father was John Parkin and his mother was Maria Dorothea Ferreira. He had a brother and two sisters, named Alfred, Maria Magdalena and Martha Suzanna.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had seven half-brothers and three half-sisters, named William, John, Robert, George, Cradock, Isaac, Frederick, Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte.
