John was born on January 18th, 1813 in England.  John's father was John Parkin and his mother was Elizabeth Howard. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, Robert, George, Cradock, Isaac, Frederick, Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte.  He was the second oldest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Alfred, Thomas, Maria Magdalena and Martha Suzanna.  He died at the age of 59 on March 22nd, 1872 in Kimberley.
