William was born on June 26th, 1810 in London, England.  William's father was John Parkin and his mother was Elizabeth Howard. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, George, Cradock, Isaac, Frederick, Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte.  He was the oldest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Alfred, Thomas, Maria Magdalena and Martha Suzanna.  He died at the age of 74 on January 25th, 1885 in Umkomaas.
