Kalman was born on January 6th, 1833 in Golub-Dobrzyn, Poland.1   Kalman's father was Abram Pieniek and his mother was Gela (Gitla). He had four brothers and five sisters, named Lewin, Izrael, Nisson, Michal, Ester, Gittel, Itta, Frumet and Itta.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.
