Hudys Etia was born in 1854 in Hrubieszow, Lublin, Poland.1   Hudys Etia's father was Chaim Peniak and her mother was Basia Bajla Ruchla Torba.  Her paternal grandparents were Eli Peniak and Liba Gersztein; her maternal grandparents were Herszek Torba and Gitla Trost. She had a brother and two sisters, named Elias Hersz, Gitla Liba and Henia Szajndla.  She was the youngest of the four children.
