Elias Hersz was born in 1842 in Hrubieszow, Lublin, Poland.1   Elias Hersz's father was Chaim Peniak and his mother was Basia Bajla Ruchla Torba.  His paternal grandparents were Eli Peniak and Liba Gersztein; his maternal grandparents were Herszek Torba and Gitla Trost. He had three sisters named Gitla Liba, Henia Szajndla and Hudys Etia.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 4 in 1846 in Hrubieszow, Lublin, Poland.1
