John was born in 1853.  John's father was Henderson (Hence) Virden and his mother was Dicey Martin Scott.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Anderson (Virgin) Virden and Elizabeth Benefield; his maternal grandparents were George Washington Scott and Mary Polly Hill. He had a brother and five sisters, named Wiley, Mary, Lousia, Lydia, Ellen and Eveline.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
