    The source of the address for Ana Feides nee Gittle Struza / Struzer /
    Strouzer./etc was written on the back of an envelope that I found while
    I was going through my late father's papers.  Luckily, Sidney never threw
    anything away!  Paul Armony's email address is parmony@fibertel.com.ar
    I think the last bit of correspondence will probably fit in with our need to find out about the gaucho branch of the family!

    The address you indicated is very special, Dock Sur is a very poor area, no Jews there, perhaps some exceptions since it was one of the last places where been prostitution houses managed by Jewish men, with Jewish Polish girls, till 1930s, and perhaps till Peron's beginning time in  1945. Sorry,
    but this address is very unusual.  This area is inhabited by Italian immigrants and very poor people is the port
    area for oil distilleries and electric power station, also Dock Sud is an
    isle south of Buenos Aires (Dock is a harbour). Today is very dangerous to
    transit inside, only fast traffic to Buenos Aires city.

    I found your relative ANA STRUZER married FEIDES she dead 22 September of 1959, buried in the Jewish cemetery of Berazategui, south of Buenos Aires, used  to buried poor Jewish people, in general the inhumation  by community expenses, free for the relatives of the dead person.We have other 7 Struzer in our records, buried in the Jewish cemetery of Tablada, west of Buenos Aires, the Jewish biggest cemetery in Argentina,
    more than 100.000 burials, Berazategui has only 14.000.
    
    I have been in touch with a guy called Carlos Glickstein in Buenos Aires to do a bit more detective work on Ana.  He hasn't replied, so I might contact him again as a reminder (He has better English than Paul.

         November 1997 Report from Argentina JGS President Paul Armory: "AMIA (the biggest Kehila of Buenos Aires) has four cemeteries of Ashkenazi Jews and two of them (Tablada and Berazategui) that are computerized with elementary information: name and burial location, only. Today, after half-hour inquiry, I obtained some number of people buried there, perhaps 112,000.
    
    La Tablada Cemetery: Avenida Crovara 2824, 1766 La Tablada; Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Largest Jewish cemetery in South America. A memorial monument for the 86 killed and 300 wounded in the bombing on July 18, 1994 was unveiled on July 16, 1995. La Tablada, which covers 138 acres and has 70,000 graves, is the largest Jewish cemetery in the country. With Latin America's largest Jewish population, Argentina has 230,000 people who identify themselves as Jews. Tablada has computerized records.     In 1889, 824 Russian Jews arrived in Argentina on the S.S. Weser and became gauchos (Argentine cowboys). The gauchos bought land and established a colony, which they named Moiseville. Due to lack of funding, the gauchos appealed to Baron Maurice de Hirsch for funds and the Baron subsequently founded the Jewish Colonization Association. During its heyday, the Association owned more than 600,000 hectares of land, populated by more than 200,000 Jews. While many of these cooperative ranches are now owned by non-Jews, Jews continue to run some of the properties.
    
    Between 1906 and 1912, Jewish immigration increased at a rate of 13,000 immigrants per year. Most of the immigrants were Ashkenazi Jews from Europe, but a number of Sephardic Jews from Morocco and the Ottoman Empire also settled in Argentina. By 1920, more than 150,000 Jews were living in Argentina.
    
    Anti-Semitic attacks against Jews were infrequent in Argentina before World War I. Following the Russian Revolution, between 1918 and 1930, anti-revolutionary feelings developed into full-blown anti-Semitism against the Rusos. From January 7-13, 1919, a general strike in Buenos Aires lead to a pogrom against the Jews. Many were beaten and had their property burned and looted.
    
    Despite anti-Semitic actions against the Jews and increasing xenophobia, Jews became involved in most sectors of Argentine society. Still they were unable to be work in the government or military and so many became farmers, peddlers, artisans and shopkeepers. Cultural and religious organizations flourished and a Yiddish press and theater opened in Buenos Aires, as well as a Jewish hospital and a number of Zionist organizations.
    
    Post World War II.
    Juan Peron’s rise to power in 1946 worried many Jews because of he was a Nazi sympathizer with fascist leanings. Peron halted Jewish immigration to Argentina, introduced Catholic religious instruction in public schools and allowed Argentina to become a haven for fleeing Nazis. On the other hand, Peron also expressed sympathy for Jewish rights and established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1949. Since then, more than 45,000 Jews have immigrated to Israel from Argentina.
    
    Peron was overthrown in 1955, which was followed by another wave of anti-Semitism. In 1960, Israeli agents abducted Adolf Eichmann from a Buenos Aires suburb.

    You were also thinking aloud about whether the Getzil Struzer from Galicia who arrived at Ellis Island on March 29, 1892 from Bremen might be our Gittel.  Getzil was 24 in March 1892, so she was probably born in 1867.  The oldest child of Michael and Chaya Struzer for whom we've worked out an approximate birth year is Isaac (1879), followed by Joseph (1880), Zigmund (1881) and Sam (1889) -- so I think this Gitzel may have been too old to be a match, although who knows?
    
    This other record may be a better bet -- this passenger, named Gittel Struza, was 18 on July 22, 1905, thus probably born in 1887.  She was also headed to London, where we know that some of our Struzas were living in 1905:
