    David was born in about 1893 in tsarist Russia, near Kiev.  He was one of nine children.  David's middle initial J. was probably from the patronymic he used in Russia, since his father's name was Isaac. 
    
    As a young man of 16 or 17, David left Russia through Odessa and reached New York before June 5, 1917.  He told one grandson that he hid in a barrel onboard to avoid detection (which may explain why no record has been found of his arrival at Ellis Island).  David's older brothers Meyer and Simon also emigrated to the U.S., as did one sister; the other children stayed in Russia.
    
    David left Russia in part to avoid being drafted into the tsar's army; even so, he was obliged to register for the U.S. draft in the summer of 1917, when he was 23 years old and single.  He was not yet a citizen.  According to his daughter Shirley, he may have been a conscientious objector.  He draft registration card states that he was of medium height, medium build, had brown eyes and brown hair.  At the time, he was residing at 970 Freeman St. in the Bronx with his cousin Samuel (son of his brother Meyer), and working as a tailor for Ellis & Lovett at 18 West 24th St. in Manhattan.
    
    On March 26, 1922, when David was 27, he married 18-year-old Anna Strauss at 89 Osborn St., corner of Pitkin Ave., in Brooklyn.  (Anna gave her age as 20 on the marriage certificate.)  They both gave their address as 693 Stone Ave. (a few blocks away; later renamed Mother Gaston Blvd.) in Brooklyn, which was Anna's parents' address.  David was still working as a tailor.  He gave his parents' names as Isaac and Sara, and his mother's maiden name as "Firt."  Both David and Anna were marrying for the first time.  The ceremony was performed by the "Rev." Usher Schor, who resided at 461 Glenmore Ave. in Brooklyn; and witnessed by Jacob Kirshberg and Bernard M. Altenberg.
    
    David and Anna had two children:  a daughter, Shirley, and a son, Bertram.  In 1930, they were living at 1662 Cropsey Ave., at the corner of Bay 14th St., in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bensonhurst.  For years, the neighborhood had been a magnet for Jewish and Italian immigrants.  There was friction between the Ashkenazy and Sephardim Jewish communities.  The subway reached the neighborhood during the 1920's.  Many of the buildings on Cropsey Ave. were condemned in the late 1930's.
    
    12/05:  Carolyn (Walker) Bulkin remembers that when she met her father-in-law-to-be, David J. Bulkin, he showed her how to operate her sewing machine.

    Other background - Cropsey Ave. history:
    Founded in 1864, the Children's Aid Society provided New York's immigrant poor children with shelter, medical care, schooling, and, in the summer, a respite from the city. Between 1880 and 1902, the Society built a four-and-a-half-acre enclave for summer outings in the fashionable resort town of Bath Beach on Gravesend Bay. With the advent of the subways in the 1920s, the town grew more populous, driving away both wealthy vacationers and the Society, which in 1930 moved its summer programs to rural Westchester and Dutchess Counties.
    
    In 1937, the already neglected beach properties on Cropsey Avenue were condemned for the construction of the Shore Road Extension (now Belt Parkway) linking Dyker Beach Park to Bensonhurst Park. Aware of their impending demise, Abbott spent two days photographing the buildings, includes two on the abandoned Children's Aid Society grounds: the Green Corridor Cottage (Abbott File 175) and the Haxtun Cottage (Abbott File 177). The parkway cut off Cropsey Avenue from the bay, and in the 1940s, the former resort was built up with attached houses and low-rise apartments.
