    David's father Isaac was a tanner.  He treated animal hides to turn them into leather.  Isaac married Sarah Rosenfeld, whose patronymic may have been Jaroslavna.  On his Social Security registration, Isaac's son Simon gave his mother's name as "Rosenfelt, while David spelled it "Rosenfield" on his own.  On David's 1922 marriage certificate, he gave his mother's maiden name as "Firt."  Isaac had a brother named Velvel (Welwel), who was living in Rzhishchev, Kievskiy uyezd, Kievskaya guberniya in 1910-11.  Isaac and Sarah had ten children in all:  the boys Meyer, Simon and David; and seven girls.
    
    Laura Bulkin 2/06 on photo caption:  One fairly confident guess I can make is that the phrase 'feh-aleph-resh gimel-ayin-sin-yod-nun', which shows up in line 3 and again in line 6,
    is some form of the verb "to forget", which makes good sense coming after
    the "zakh" ("thing") in line 3. You know, like the old joke about the
    Jewish immigrant who ended up being re-named "Sean Ferguson" at Ellis Island because he got so flustered when they asked for his name that he said "Sheyn fahrgassehn", "I already forgot"...
    
    Bernie Bulkin 1/06 on photo caption:  As to the back of the photo, I can tell you that it is not the names of the people on the front.  Rather, it seems to be in the nature of a letter to the recipient of the photo.  For example, on the fourth line down, I have made out the phrase 'shreiben unz abrief', translate as 'write us a letter' The next to last line seems to be 'yidder nut nur die zolsht zach'  which might mean 'jews not only such a thing'  or could be something a bit different, it is a fragment and you have to realize that Yiddish grammar and usage is very different from country to country (zolsht is not good Yiddish for such, which is azai, but they might be using it that way.  Zolsht could also mean 'should').  On the fifth line I see the words 'liebsht zehr'  or 'love very' but I cannot figure out the word that follows, 'shilin'.  I am going to try to find someone more expert to help.
    
    Shirley 4/05:  "I know lthat my paternal grandparents starved to death in the basement of a church during the pogroms in Russia right after World War !. They had been taken care of by the Gentile community until then."
