Thomas' father was James Whitby and his mother was Isabella Dunn Maitland. His maternal grandparents were Disney Leith Maitland and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Drummond. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Disney, Herbert, Elizabeth and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 9 in 1911 in Glasgow.
